Scope and Content

The Youngstown Fire Department Station No. 3 Records consist of duty logs, alarm reports, inspection reports, repair and maintenance logs, memoranda, minutes, supply lists, and letters. The Youngtown Fire Department was established in 1867, and Station No. 3 began operation in 1891. The station was located first located at Thomas Street, then moved to Arlington and Foster Streets, and, in 1934, was re-located to its final site at Belmont Avenue and Emerson Place. The station was closed in 1980 as part of a budget-cutting measure by the Youngstown city government.

Series List

Series 1 - Record Books
Station records books include daily logs and scattered notes on station activities from 1922 through 1940 and provide information on the names of men on duty, the times fire alarms were recorded, property damage estimates, and the cause and location of fires. There are gaps in the daily logs and a limited number of entries for 1922 through 1925 and 1934. In addition to daily log entries, several volumes contain reports at the end listing the names and addresses of owners and occupants of buildings to which the station answered alarms, the length of time firemen spent on each alarm, and the distance firemen traveled from the station to reach the site of a fire. Daily logs are arranged chronologically.

Series 2 Station Files
Station files include an incomplete set of minutes for the Youngstown Firemen's Pension Fund Board, dated 1932 - 1933 and 1938, mostly showing changes in pension rules. There are also memoranda (1931 - 1932, 1936, 1938, n.d.) written by Youngstown mayor Lionel Evans, fire chiefs Harry Callan and Herman Steinfurth, and Fire Fighters Local 312 president C.E. Dalbey. Dalbey wrote the largest number of these memos, reflecting his efforts to insure that local fire fighters paid union dues and understood the importance of being unionized. In the same folder as memoranda are a report of an International Fire Fighters Convention (n.d.) and part of a report of an Ohio Fire Fighters Convention (1938). In the reports are resolutions passed by firemen calling for safety, pension coverage, civil service classification, and other reforms. Minutes are arranged alphabetically by author.

Station files also include supply inventories and requisitions, most of which lack dates and titles, and receipts (1929, 1931 - 1933, 1935, 1938, n.d.) for gasoline, oil, and coal purchased by the station. There are additional receipts for an insurance premium paid by a station fireman in 1929 and a contribution made by a station fire fighter to the Firemen's Wife Death Benefit Fund in 1931. Receipts have been arranged alphabetically by the name of the company or organization which wrote them and have been further arranged chronologically. Station records also contain vacation lists (1932 and 1938) for firemen, two letters (one written in 1936 by Youngstown finance director Frank Barton to Fire Chief Steinfurth), and printed materials consisting of a firemen's clothing catalog (ca. 1932) and two political campaign cards (1934, n.d.) Vacation lists and letters are arranged chronologically. Printed materials are arranged by format.
