Scope and Content
The Republic Steel Corporation Audiovisual Collection includes photographic negatives and slides. The bulk of the collection consists of approximately 13,000 black and white photographic negatives. In addition there are approximately 2,000 color photographic negatives and 1,200 35 mm slides. The photographic negatives and slides date from ca. 1941-1979 and document Republic Steel Corporation's operations at both their main production facilities as well as at their subsidiary companies. Also included are photographs of company social events and activities such as award banquets, dances, and picnics.
The negatives and slides are organized into three series and are listed in alphabetical order based on titles and descriptions provided by Republic Steel Corporation. The majority of the titles refer to the location of the plant and most of the descriptions are taken from the plants' departments.
Republic Steel Corporation was founded in 1899 when 34 independent mills from across the nation joined together to organize the Republic Iron and Steel Company. These founding mills included the Mahoning Valley's Brown Bonnell Iron Company, Andrews Brothers and Company, and Mahoning Iron Company. From 1927 to 1937 Republic expanded its holdings by acquiring a number of other companies including the Trumbull Steel Company of Warren, Ohio; the Central Alloy Steel Corporation of Canton, Ohio; the Donner Steel Company of Buffalo, New York; and Gulf States Steel of Gadsden, Alabama. Republic also purchased the Corrigan, McKinney Steel Company of Cleveland, Ohio and also the Truscon Steel Company of Youngstown, Ohio. Following these acquisitions Republic became the third largest steel producer in the nation behind the United States Steel Corporation and the Bethlehem Steel Company. To reflect these new acquisitions the company formally changed its name to the Republic Steel Corporation.
These acquisitions provided Republic Steel the capacity to produce unfinished steel as well as light steel finished products that could be marketed directly to consumers. This diversification allowed Republic Steel to weather the Depression better than most of the other major steel companies. It was also during this period that Republic Steel became involved in a labor dispute with the Steel Workers Organizing Committee (SWOC). Republic Steel, along with the other 'Little Steel" companies, refused to sign a contract with the SWOC recognizing the union and this led to the "Little Steel Strike" of 1937. During the summer of 1937 thousands of Republic Steel, Youngstown Sheet and Tube, and Inland Steel employees went on strike, shutting down steel mills across the country. However Republic Steel's Warren and Niles plants remained opened, increasing the tension in these communities as some of the workers joined the picket lines but others remained at their jobs in the mills. Following a number of violent confrontations, including the deaths of two workers in Youngstown, the Ohio National Guard was called into the Mahoning Valley and restored order. Within a couple of weeks of the National Guard's arrival most of the striking steel workers had returned to their jobs without a union contract and Republic Steel would not sign a contract with the union until 1942.
Following the outbreak of World War II in 1941 Republic Steel greatly increased its production capabilities and in just two years had increased production by 33%. This increase in production continued after the war through the 1950s and 1960s due to the high demand for steel by consumers. Republic Steel also continued to be one of the leading developers of steel technology and was among the first companies to use continuous casting and basic oxygen furnaces. Also, Republic Steel's Youngstown plant was the first in the nation to produce pipe by both the electric weld and continuous weld processes. During this time Republic Steel also increased its supply of raw materials by acquiring mines in Minnesota and West Africa.
Republic Steel continued to increase production and sales through the early 1970s. However during the late 1970s and early 1980s sales began to decline due to a number of factors including the importation of foreign steel, costly labor battles, and a decrease in demand for steel by automobile manufacturers. In 1984 Republic Steel Corporation was purchased by the LTV Corporation. As a result the Youngstown plant was soon shut down and the Warren plant was sold to Renco Corporation, which renamed the facility Warren Consolidated Industries. In December 2000 LTV filed for bankruptcy.

A finding aid and preliminary processing was completed by Fred Previts.
