The Lykes-Youngstown Corporation Audiovisual Archives dates from 1940 to 1978 and consists of thirteen and one-half cubic feet of material. The collection includes photographs, negatives and transparencies, slides (mounted transparencies), and audio recordings. The collection consists of approximately half of the audiovisual material acquired in 1981 from Jones & Laughlin Steel, Inc., successor to the Lykes-Youngstown Corporations. The remaining material is found in the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Audiovisual Archives dating from ca. 1910 to ca. 1950 and consisting of approximately 1,600 glass plate negatives, 2,300 safety negatives, 6,000 additional safety negatives reproduced from the original nitrate negatives, and reference prints of these negatives (prints produced by the Ohio Historical Society). The Lykes-Youngstown collection, however contains over 12,000 photographs, produced from 1940s through the 1970s. Researchers wanting comprehensive visual documentation of the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company should consult both collections. Lykes-Youngstown staff photographer Perc Kelty produced most of the material in this collection. Other items possibly were produced by Ed Salt, editor of the house organ, the Youngstown Bulletin, or by other corporations.
Photographs comprise the majority of the Lykes-Youngstown Audiovisual Archives. These photographs are various sizes, black and white or color, and arranged into five subseries. The first subseries documents the steel making operations of the Lykes-Youngstown corporation and the second subseries portrays the operations of subsidiary companies. The third subseries consists of portraits and group shots while the fourth subseries documents employee activities. The fifth subseries is a miscellaneous alphabetical subject file.
The first subseries of photographs, company operations , contains scenes primarily dealing with the steel making operations of the Lykes-Youngstown Corporation. Since most of the photographs are unidentified, they are arranged alphabetically by the general name of their location in the plant. In addition, under general headings such as blast furnaces, photographs further are divided by activity portrayed (casting, construction, etc.) or locale (Hubbard, Indiana Harbor, Youngstown, unknown). Scenes of the butt-weld pipe mill, continuous weld pipe mill, electric weld pipe mill, and seamless pipe mills are filed together under the general heading of pipe. Unidentified plant scenes are filed under plant scenes-exteriors or plant scenes-interiors. Other plant scenes are among photographs used for the 1922, 1930, 1931, 1963, and 1966 company calendars. Close-up photographs of unidentified machinery are filed under machinery. Other prints of machinery are found under plant scenes or under their respective part of the plant (hot strip mill, bar mill, etc.). Other interesting scenes are of employees at work (at an office desk or in the plant), aerial views of the Youngstown and Chicago districts, the Boardman office building and technical center, and Great Lakes ore ships. Photographs of the Loveland Hill housing development, 1917-1918, constructed for Youngstown employees by the Buckeye Land Company, also appear.
The second subseries portrays the operations of subsidiary companies wholly or partly owned by the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company. Photographs depict scenes of the Erie Mining Company (Minnesota taconite); the Iron Ore Company of Canada (Labrador mines); The Olga Coal Company (West Virginia); Nemacolin, Pennsylvania (a coal mining town); and the Youngstown Mines Corporation (Dehue Mine, West Virginia). Unidentified mining scenes are filed under either mining-coal or mining-iron ore. Scenes of oil derricks using Youngstown pipe and other products of a Youngstown subsidiary, the Emsco-Continental Supply Company, are filed under oil drilling and then differentiated by photographer. Photographs of the Fibercast Corporations, a manufacturer of fiberglass pipe, and the Youngstown Metal Products Company, a manufacturer of metal appliances, also are included in this subseries.
The third subseries contains portraits and group shots of employees and others arranged alphabetically by job description or organizational name. Group shots of the Board of Directors, executives, office staff, medical staff, and other employees as well as group shots of the Directors of the American Iron and Steel Institute and the Traffic Club of Pittsburgh are included. Portraits of Youngstown Sheet and Tube executives are filed under executives and then alphabetically by name. Portraits of other employees are found under steel workers and then alphabetically by name. Researchers should note that a number of unidentified portraits of both executives and steel workers are a part of this subseries.
The fourth subseries deals with employee activities. Photographs of employees during award presentations, banquets, on the golf course, and at parties and picnics are included. Also included are scenes of the Lykes-Youngstown Corporation exhibits at trade and industry shows which often show Youngstown salesmen explaining products. Photographs of groups touring Youngstown plants (listed as tour groups) are in this subseries since Youngstown personnel often led these tours. Photographs of the 1937 strike show some picket line activity and caches of weapons gathered from strikers. Scenes of Perc Kelty's photographic studio and examples of some of his prize winning photographs are found under the heading: industrial photography.
The fifth subseries is an alphabetical subject file of miscellaneous photographs
which include some of Perc Kelty's commercial and artistic photography. Most
of the photographs in this subseries have little to do with the steel industry.
There are, nonetheless, photographs from companies that used Youngstown products
such as the Blaw-Knox Company, the Boyertown Auto Body Works, and the Caterpillar
Tractor Company. Miscellaneous construction scenes and pipeline construction
scenes also are included in this subseries. Scenes of assembly lines, buildings
using Youngstown steel or pipe, a panorama of Duluth, Minnesota, ca. 1950, and
scenes of the East Liverpool, Ohio, survey marker dedication, ca. 1961, are
also of interest.
The Ohio Historical Society acquired the Lykes-Youngstown Corporation Audiovisual Archives as a gift of Jones & Laughlin Steel Incorporated, successor in interests of the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company, in December 1981. Richard W. Arpi processed the collection in January 1985. The collection was transferred to the Archives/Library of the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry & Labor in March of 1996. The finding aid was updated at that time.
