The Claude R. Adkins Papers is a collection of two manuals he used while an employee at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company in the Seamless Hot Mill Maintenance Department.The Foreman's Manual was used as a guide to the efficient handling of personnel and the discharge of every day duties by managerial personnel. The manual was issued by the company in original form. The sections were updated and revised as needed. This is noted by the issue date shown on the pages. These dates cover a nearly 20 year span, ranging from 1948 to 1970.
The Work Simplification Program Session Notes was also meant as a guide to management personnel. The Program was designed to improve work conditions, machinery, and costs to benefit the employee and the company. The manual is a series of session notes for reference and execution of the Program.
The Claude R. Adkins Papers also includes a program for the Thirteenth Commencement Ceremony at Youngstown State University. Youngstown State University Department of Continuing Education in cooperation with Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company sponsored both one- and two-year courses in furthering the education of Youngstown Sheet & Tube employees. Adkins is a 1970 graduate of the two-year course in Technical Education, Maintenance Program.
Series 1 - Foreman's Manual Information
Series 1 of the Claude R. Adkins Papers is the information contained in the Foreman's Manual #636 issued to Mr. Adkins of the Seamless Hot Mill Maintenance Department of Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company. The folders are arranged in the same order as they were removed from the binder in which they were originally contained. The folders are labeled according to their sectional divisions in the binder.Series 2- Work Simplification Program Session Notes
The second series in the Claude R. Adkins Papers is the session notes of the Work Simplification Program of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company. It also contains some personal items and notes of Charles Adkins pertaining to the Work Simplification Program. The folders are arranged in the same order as they were contained in the original binder. They are numbered and labeled accordingly.Series 3- Youngstown State University (YSU) /Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company Continuing Education
Series three contains the 13th Commencement Ceremony Program of the YSU Department of Continuing Education in cooperation with the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company. The program includes a list of names of the graduates in the program for both 1 year and 2 year courses. Mr. Adkins is a graduate in the 2-year course in technical education, maintenance program.
The Ohio Historical Society acquired the Claude R. Adkins Papers through a donation from Mr. Adkins himself in 1995. Angela M. Pollock processed the collection in 1996. The Ohio Historical Society owns the property rights to the collection. What rights the donor possessed in this collection have been dedicated to the public. Consideration of all other copyrights is the responsibility of the author and publisher. This collection is open under the rules and regulations of the Ohio Historical Society. Researchers are requested to cite the collection name, collection number, the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor, and the Ohio Historical Society in all footnote and bibliographic references.
