The Ohio Historical Society owns the property rights to the collection. What rights the donor possessed in this collection have been dedicated to the public. This collection consists of correspondence, invoices, proposals, deeds, contracts, agreements, catalogs, pamphlets, brochures, booklets, flyers, and photographs from the files of the Chief Field Engineer's Office of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company (YS & T). Traditionally, the function of the Chief Field Engineer included monitoring construction and maintenance projects, directing and assisting junior engineers, and serving as liaison with contractors and other departments. Materials in this collection are arranged in series by company, type, and then chronologically and/or alphabetically. A few items pertain to the Brier Hill Steel Company (BHS), but materials concerning YS & T constitute the bulk of the collection. Series 1 - Brier Hill Steel Company
This series consists of various correspondence and printed proposals for the purchase of pumps and generators. Also included are correspondence and financial records, i.e., bills, invoices, and receipts relating to miscellaneous products and services.Series 2 - Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company
This series consists of correspondence, legal materials, personnel materials, proposals, and miscellaneous materials. Items pertain to Campbell Park, sewers at the Brier Hill Works, real estate transactions, and letters of application from engineers who sought employment with YS & T. Miscellaneous materials include a photocopy of a brochure (ca. 1920, original is in exhibit) that illustrates the various types of homes constructed by the Buckeye Land Company, a subsidiary of YS & T. Also of note are several blueprints and drawings of a railroad engine, railroad cars, a typical track spike used in rail construction, and the Brier Hill Mine. Included is a study prepared by the Permutit Company that records the chemical composition of the Mahoning River from 1927 - 1928.Series 3 - Printed Matter
This series includes catalogs, brochures, pamphlets, booklets, and flyers. Several items relate to equipment and accessories for railroads. These include switchstands, railway tie and safety fasteners, anchor bottom tie plates, lock-nuts, and locomotive bells. Other printed matter includes articles prepared by the National Slag Association, and a brochure that details a proposal to improve slack water navigation on the Beaver, Mahoning, and Shenango rivers.Series 4 - Photographs
Photographic materials include the flooding of the Mahoning River in 1913 and resulting damage, the natural stage of the Mahoning River, YS & T housing under construction, and close-up views of railroad tracks.
