The bulk of the material is in the form of black and white photographs. There are also numerous full color slides displaying various action scenes from both the interior and exterior of the building. In addition, there are a few exterior panoramic shots of the Ohio Works.
Also included in this collection are 4 16mm films of the dismantling of an ore bridge. There was also one Polaroid land camera, c. 1950's, and one Kodak movie camera, c. 1950-1960 which were transferred to the museum collection.
United States Steel (U.S. Steel), formed in 1901 by financier John Pierpont (J.P.) Morgan, was comprised of 8 major companies. These included the American Steel and Wire Company, the American Steel Sheet Company, the American Tin Plate Company, the Carnegie Company, the Federal Steel Company, the National Steel Company, and the National Tube Company. U.S. Steel's Ohio Steel Company was founded in 1892. When U.S. Steel and the National Steel Company merged, National Steel bought the Youngstown plant and made it part of the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Division. The Ohio Steel Company was then renamed the Ohio Works in 1950. Even though U.S. Steel was the leading steel manufacturer in the world, Ohio Works closed in 1980 due to financial difficulties. Efforts were made to reopen the mill as a worker-owned facility leading to a lawsuit in an attempt to stop the demolition of the plant. The case was lost and the Ohio Works was demolished soon afterwards.
Series 2 - Color Slides
The color slide portion of the collection consists of approximately 115 miscellaneous
color slides of the Ohio Works. There are exterior panoramic photos, as well
as color interior photos showing various areas of the steel mill at work.
The Ohio Historical Society acquired this collection of photographs and color slides on September 15, 1987 in donation by Mr. Nicholas Yovick of Youngstown, Ohio. Preliminary processing was done upon receiving the collection in 1987. Final processing was completed at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor Archives/Library in August of 1997. As opposed to its catalogued order upon receipt, the collection has been refiled into an order which would provide for easy handling and locating. Presently, the collection is catalogued alphabetically by subject followed by date. Final processing was done by Amy Balaban.
