Programs

The Ohio Historic Preservation Office undertakes the following archaeological programs:

  • Provides technical assistance to federal, state, and local government agencies, educational institutions, private property owners, organizations, firms, and individuals about the identification, evaluation, and preservation of important archaeological sites in Ohio;

  • Provides educational programs to federal, state, and local government agencies, educational institutions, private property owners, organizations, firms, and individuals about the identification, evaluation, and preservation of important archaeological sites in Ohio;

  • Integrates archaeological information into A Future For Ohio's Past: The Ohio Historic Preservation Plan;

  • Reviews federal undertakings pursuant to Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, for their effect on archaeological sites listed on or eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places;

  • Maintains the Ohio Archaeological Inventory, the official record of archaeological site locations and information on such sites in Ohio;

  • Maintains reports of archaeological investigations conducted pursuant to federal and state laws;

  • Maintains a list of archaeological consultants qualified to undertake archaeological investigations in Ohio;

  • Reviews nominations of archaeological sites to the National Register of Historic Places and the State Registry of Archaeological Landmarks;

  • Reviews applications to dedicate archaeological sites as Archaeological Preserves, including submerged resources in Lake Erie;

  • Reviews applications for permits to conduct archaeological investigations on state lands.

  • Archaeology Guidelines is an 89-page publication containing the standards and specifications by which the Ohio Historic Preservation Office reviews, evaluates, and comments on archaeological research conducted under our review authority. $6.95 plus tax, in the Museum Shop at the Ohio Historical Center, $8.92 by mail or phone including tax, shipping, and handling, Ohio Historical Society members $8.18.   • Participate in Archaeology is a brochure published by the National Park Service explaining how to get involved in archaeology programs. Free.

  • History in The Ground: Archaeology and Local Historical Organizations is a 4-page booklet on how local historical organizations and communities can begin local archaeology programs. Free.

  • Preliminary Documentation Form For Archaeological Sites is a one-page form used by the public, avocational archaeologists, and artifact collectors to report the location of and information about archaeological sites to the Ohio Historic Preservation Office. Free.

  • Reporting Archaeological Sites to the Ohio Historic Preservation Office is a 2-page fact sheet for the public, avocational archaeologists, artifact collectors, and private property owners explaining what happens when archaeological sites are reported to the Ohio Historic Preservation Office. Free. 

  • Consultants List, available online, is a list of professional archaeological consultants provided as an aid to those seeking the services of a professional archaeologist. Free.

  • Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation is a 26-page reprint from the "Federal Register" intended to provide technical advice about archaeological and historic preservation activities and methods. Free.
