Cincinnati Museum Center Heritage Programs is an all-volunteer, highly successful outreach association of the Cincinnati Historical Society. Since 1983, the group has shared its passion for history through its many entertaining and educational programs. In a given year, the group of approximately 50 volunteer docents reaches thousands of people.
Every Saturday and Sunday, the docents give free tours of Union Terminal, home of the Cincinnati Museum Center. Other popular tours include going into the long-abandoned Cincinnati subway under Central Avenue, to the sites of Cincinnati’s inclines, through churches, into Over-the-Rhine breweries and wineries, to farms and murky basements, sites of former ballparks, and even a into police command center.
Each year, in addition to offering the perennial favorites, these Ambassadors of History research and develop new tours and events on historical, cultural and architectural themes. It takes a team of three or more docents to research a particular topic, plan the site visits and execute the tour.
The group’s speaker’s bureau has developed a repertoire of 28 topics into audio-visual programs.
Also each year, Heritage Programs creates History Sessions, a five week class on a particular theme of Cincinnati history. Docents study their subject for several months and create a presentation complete with images and artifacts.
In past years, docents have been requested as Cincinnati step-on guides for the National Trust for Historic Preservation, American Society of Highway Engineers, and Tall Stacks visitors--to name just a few.
