2006 Ohio Historic Preservation Office Award Recipients

Clermont County Park District and Burgess & Niple

Chilo
The Chilo Lock and Dam Operations Building was built to help make the Ohio River navigable year-round, and served from 1927 to 1964. Recognizing the abandoned building's history, Clermont County Park District has transformed it into the centerpiece of the park where it stands. Using funds from the Federal Highway Administrationís Scenic Byways Program, the district hired Burgess & Niple to create a visitor center, with exhibits that tell about life on the river. A new stair tower and observation deck of simple steel construction, similar to the old water tower, have been added. Inside, the original functional character of the building has been maintained, including glazed brick walls and several pieces of vintage equipment. The visitor center preserves rchitectural and historical ties to life on the Ohio, gives the old building new life, and creates a new destination in a unique setting with great views of the river.
