2006 Ohio Historic Preservation Office Award Recipients

Muskingum River Water Trail

Athens, Coschocton, Marietta, McConnelsville, and Zanesville
The Muskingum River Water Trail tells the story of the river from Coshocton to Marietta, reaching a non-traditional audience -- Ohio boaters. A new map and guide points out 19th century locks, dams, bridges, and other historic places along the Muskingum, which was once plied by steamboats traveling to and from the Ohio River. Forty-five thousand copies of the new brochure are being distributed. Complementing the water trail is the annual Muskingum Riverfest. ODNR staff and volunteers interpret local history and culture, including demonstrations of "locking through" the river's 160-year-old lock system, which was named a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 2001.

Other ODNR projects promoting the Muskingum and its history have reached hundreds of thousands of people, including a segment on Ohio News Network's Discover Ohio series, and a one-minute spot on ODNR's Outdoor Notebook. In addition, the Muskingum and its lock system have been featured in the Division of Watercraft's calendar.
