Downtown Lima, Inc. /
LJB Inc. / Chambers, Murphy & Burge Restoration Architects
Built in 1887 to serve the needs of freight and passenger traffic on the Pennsylvania
Railroad, the Lima Train Depot closed in 1990 after more than 100 years of
service to the community. As the city's last remaining passenger station,
it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making the owner,
Downtown Lima Incorporated, eligible to apply for a 20 percent federal income
tax credit on expenses related to rehabilitating it. To qualify for the tax
credit, the design team, local architects LJB Inc., and Chambers, Murphy &
Burge Restoration Architects of Akron, followed the Secretary of the Interior's
Standards for Rehabilitation, a set of guidelines used nationwide for work
to historic buildings. The project has given the building a useful new life
while preserving the beamed ceiling, woodwork, train platform, and other features
that contribute to its Victorian character. Completed in May 2004, the refurbished
Depot now houses the City of Lima Utilities Department Customer Service Center.
