2005 Ohio Historic Preservation Office Award Recipients

American Cancer
Society, Hamilton County Unit, Ohio Division / GBBN Architects receives award
American Cancer Society, Hamilton County Unit, Ohio Division / GBBN Architects

Cincinnati's former Ursuline Academy Building has a new life as the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge and Cancer Resource Center. Built in 1880 as the home of A.S. Winslow, then added to in 1925 as a private school, the four-story building is a combination of late 19th and early 20th century architectural styles. The renovation by GBBN Architects of Cincinnati paid careful attention to preserving the significant features of both eras, including woodwork by 19th century Cincinnati artisan William Fry. The Gothic chapel of the 1920s with its stained glass, stenciled ceiling, and restored lanterns, now serves as the Great Room. New features such as the entrance canopy were designed to be contemporary but compatible - complementing the historic building without replicating it. Twenty-three guest rooms were created on the third and fourth floors. Families face many challenges when a loved one needs cancer treatment far from home. It can be uncomfortable and extremely costly to stay in hotels for weeks at a time. Now when patients travel to Cincinnati for cancer treatment, the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge offers a comfortable, home-like environment in which to stay -- a "home away from home" for cancer patients and their caregivers at a time when they need it most.
