Guidelines for requesting
marriage records held by the Ohio Historical Society
- Before September 7, 1949
- Ohio county probate courts have kept marriage records from the date
of the county's formation. There is no statewide index to marriage records
before September 7, 1949. Go to the list of
county probate court marriage records held at the Ohio Historical Society.
If the Ohio Historical Society does not hold a county's marriage records,
please contact the county's probate court. A list of county courthouse
contacts is available at Ohio County Courthouse
Addresses.
- After September 7, 1949
- The Ohio Historical Society holds probate court marriage records for
Delaware, Franklin,
Marion, and Tuscarawas
counties after September 7, 1949. Please visit the list of marriage
records held at the Ohio Historical Society for a description of
the Delaware, Franklin, Marion, or Tuscarawas marriage records in our
collection.
All other counties' marriage records for September 7, 1949 to the
present must be requested from the probate court of the county where
the marriage occurred. A list of county courthouse contacts is available
at Ohio County Courthouse Addresses. The
Ohio Department of Health maintains a statewide index to marriage

- Divorce Records
- Divorce records are maintained by the court of common pleas in each
county. Prior to 1851, the records were found in either the county supreme
court, the county chancery court, or the county common pleas court.
Appeals were made to the state legislature. After 1913 divorces were
handled by a division of the county court of common pleas known as the
domestic relations court. Please contact the court of common pleas of
the county where the divorce was filed to request records. A list of
county courthouse contacts is available at Ohio
County Courthouse Addresses.
- Guidelines for requesting marriage records
- Before making a request for a marriage record, please confirm that
we hold records for the county and time period by reviewing County
Marriage Records Held at the Ohio Historical Society. Requests that
are submitted with a county, name(s) of spouse(s), and exact year of
marriage are processed by our staff as COPY
REQUESTS. The county where the marriage was registered and at least
one spouse's name must be provided, but our staff will search a 10 year
time frame if the exact year of marriage is unknown. Requests that are
submitted with a county, name(s) of spouse(s), and a time frame within
the 10 year span are processed by our staff as RESEARCH
REQUESTS. A complete description of all request policies can be
reviewed at Guidelines for Offsite Copy and
Research Requests.
