About the Archives/Library

Collections Available

  • Audiovisual -- 8,500 cubic feet, more than one million photographic images
  • Books -- 140,000 (82,500 titles)
  • Local Government Records -- 13,500 cubic feet
  • Manuscripts -- 10,700 cubic feet
  • Maps -- more than 15,000
  • Micrographics -- 85,000 rolls microfilm, 12,000 sheets microfiche
  • Newspapers -- 4,500 titles, 20,000 volumes, 45,000 rolls microfilm
  • State of Ohio Archives -- 20,000 cubic feet


Library Services
The Library Services Department catalogs printed material for the Archives/Library Division and printed material, manuscripts, and photographs for the Youngstown Archives/Library.
The Processing/Automation Department processes 700 cubic feet of manuscript material each year and supervises the Ohio Newspaper Project and library automation projects. The Acquisitions and Collections Department orders library material and accessions new collections.
Preservation Department
The Preservation Department provides full in-house conservation treatment for the society's collections, produces more than six hundred rolls of master camera negative microfilm and 3,000 duplicate rolls of microfilm per year, and handles photograph and audiovisual duplication efforts.
Research Services
The Research Services staff provide reference assistance, retrieve requested items from our stacks, make photocopies for patrons, answer mail, email, and telephone requests, and conduct tours and workshops for the public. Our Research Room, located on the third floor of the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus, is open to the public.
State of Ohio Archives
The State of Ohio Archives accessions and processes approximately 800 cubic feet of government records each year, participates in the state's records management program, and assists local governments with records management issues.
Youngstown Historical Center of Industry & Labor, Archives/Library
The Archives/Library at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry & Labor maintains collections relating to northeastern Ohio, the upper Ohio River Valley, and industrial, labor, urban, and ethnic history.


Ohio Network of American History Research Centers
The Ohio Network of American History Research Centers was established in 1970 to aid in the collection, preservation, and accessibility of research materials related to Ohio history. Network centers include: the Ohio Historical Society, the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry & Labor, Western Reserve Historical Society, the University of Akron, Bowling Green State University, the University of Cincinnati, Ohio University, and Wright State University.
Ohio Historical Records Advisory Board
The Archives/Library supports the activities of the Ohio Historical Records Advisory Board (OHRAB), a body appointed by the governor and affiliated with the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, that works to preserve and make accessible Ohio's historical records. The Ohio 2003 Plan outlines the board's goals and priorities, and may be obtained through the Archives/Library.
