A. CAMPBELL TO WORTHINGTON

June 13th. 1813

Sir

This day I had the honor of receiving from you the Presidents Message for which please to accept my thanks for your attention I feel anxious to know what prospects are entertained of the mediation of Russia -- I feel anxious for the return of peace whenever it can be obtained upon good terms for I see so much rascallity practised upon the U.S. by her agents that are now imployed - that when a new host shall flud the country, in consequence of the direct tones all striving who can pluck the nost feathers out of the Great Goose -- that they will not leave even down upon her. --

I this day received a letter from a very intelligent Gentleman at Fort Meigs, who states the troops to be very unhealthy and great numbers die above seven hundred upon the sick list, he states the waters to be too low to trans- port provisions in Boats unless the rivers shall take a rise, if the waters do not rise they will be compelled to resort to the old way by pack-horses -- the most tedious as well as the most expensive -- for waggons are out of the question -- we have heard of the occupation of York by our troops and also their having evacuated it again; I am unable to understand this mode of carrying on the war -- If we do actually mean to take Canada I would think it improper to invade the country untill we were prepared to keep every foot of ground we might talce from the enemy -- we have a report here in circulation that Fort George is taken -- the report obtains some credit --

I should be glad to have your opinion as to the duration of the war if you can form an opinion satisfactory to your self. I know all opinions and the best formed opinions may be found erronous but I know that you have better means of forming an opinion than what I have -

If you can spare a moment to drop me a line from the hurry of business laying taxes &c I shall receive it with pleasure --

A Campbell

Genl. T. Worthington
