TRYAL TANNER[?[ TO WORTHINGTON Camp at Trumbull 6. Ohio Feby 2, 1813 The Hona. Thos. Worthington Sir. I have good information that Genl. Harrisons Ordered his usual detachments to concentrate at the rapids of the Miami, that Genl. Winchester arrived previous to the appointed time with Volunteers & 200 regular Troops, being filled with military ardor, without orders advanced to the river Raisin where he was attacked at 4 o'clock A.M. by the British who had crossed on the ice with at least Eight or ten peace of cannon & the savages mounted with Tomhawks in each flank have completely defeated the detachment not one hundred have made goodtheir retreat -- at upper sandusky we have 30 pieces of heavy ordinance & a large Quantity of Provision which will be our object worth the enemies attention, the greater part of Harrisons Troops are drafted Militia & their terms of service expires the 25th Insta nt what is to transpire God only knows -- I s the state of Ohio to defend her extensive frontier, have our W'ar members & Cabinet made no arrangement to defend tie fronteers against the British & savages combined -- Altho you are not considered as a stickler for War we most look to our Senators for efficient War or Peace -- John S. Edwards Esqr our new Member to Congress is dead & is this day to be intered You will please pardon me for troubling you with this hasty scrawl -- Am sir your obedient Humbl servt Tryal Tanneys [Tanner?] 165 |
