FINLEY TO WORTHINGTON Chillicothe Jany 23. 1813 Mr Dear Sir I had firmly resolved in my own mind that I would not again trouble you on the subject of appointments: but on the representation of Colo. Miller, who in my opinion is one of the first officers we have as well as one of the best of men, I am prevailed upon to dispense with my resolution on the present occ- asion; and to unite with him in recommending the case of Elias Langham, the younger. He is indeed a promising young man, and, in my opinion, merits atten- tion. I speak from e;:perience. Elias was with me on my short campaign, and, during the whole of it conducted himself in the most orderly and soldierlike manner. He seems to [blotted out] much coolness and deliberate bravery as any veteran I have seen. He is, as you know, a very modest young men. He says little but resolute and determinate in executing whatever he may be intrusted with. In short I know of no young man more meritorious of the attention of Goverrnment than he is -- Cole Miller tells me there is a vacant Lieutenancy (in what Regiment I know not) were it possible to obtain it for him it would not only afford pleasure to me but gratification to all his acquaintances. I Imnow you will do every thing in your power for him I am Dr Sir your very humble servant Sam Finley General T. Worthington N. I happen to be s;lrt of paper and have wrote you on a half sheet 154 |
