JAMES DENNY TO WORTHINGTON

Circleville January 19th 1813

Dr Sir

I have been honored by the receipt of your favor of the 5th November on the subject of the pay for the Volunteers of Gencral Hull's Army, which has proved very satisfactory to a number of these brave unfortunate men, to whom I have comunicated the information you gave me - Yet I am sorry to inform you that notwithstanding the friendly attention you have paid to their wants they still remain unsatisfied -- General Taylor finds ways and means to create delays and procrestinate the payments; but how imperious the causes may be, which produce these effects I cannot determine neither do I believe -- that our government participates in them - although its enemies are making use of this circumstance as a mean to injure the cause in which we so cheerfully engage -- I have been told that the Marietta Bank have loaned 10,000 dollars for the purpose of paying Col McArthur's Regiment -- This sum will be insufficient to meet the demand -- I hope and trust that government will no longer hold a deaf ear to the pressing necessities of these men -- their claims at most is but a small remuneration for their privations and sufferings during the time they were in service -- the amount of which when compared with the expenses of the present Campaign will sink into a paltry sum -

A report is in circulation here than an exchange of all the prisoners taken at the Surrender of Detroit has been executed -- If such is the case, we may flatter ourselves of -et having an opportunity to regain the laurels which was vilely thrown away -- I earnestly hope that we may be called again into service, before General Harrison's Army enters Canada, as I am persuaded that our men to a man, is ambitious of being at the reduction of alden and that their conduct in such an event will be highly honorable to themselves and glorious to the State of Ohio -- If I was not confident that such would be the result nothing could induce me to enter the field again, as we would thereby doubly seal our own and our Country's disgrace -- I am very desirous of serving in another Campaign in Canada under a Commander of more courage and ability than our late one; and if our Regiments are not to be called into the service again, I shall solicit an appointment in the Troops to be raised for a year, -- If you can feel at liberty to promote my ambition to a command in these troops -- I pled. e myself that whatever advances of friendship you make in this way shall be repaid with inter- est -

Accept Dr. sir my most respectfull regards - I am your obdt Hl Sert

James Denny
