TO WORTHINGTON

[Jan., 1813]

Dear Sir

agreeable to your Request I will endeavour to give you some account of the Rapids of Sandusky and those of the Miami of the Lake. The Rapids of Sandusky lie thirty six miles from the mouth of Sandusky Bay which is the outlet of the Sandusky River. the Bottom on the River at the Rapids are of the first Rate of land and are exceeding fertile for Corn and Oats their is about five Hundred acres of land that is in a state of improvement and under fence And a consider- able more that has been under improvement and might be very eary put in order again the improved land is mostly on the U. States Reserve these improvements have been made by the late White and Yellow inhabitants who have been obliged to give up their country to the Enemy.

At the Rapids o the Miami Eighteen iles from the outlet of the River is the best Corn land I have ever seen the Bottom are extensive and the Quantity of improved land is Double to that of Sandusky and well fenced and with a little Labour capable of being largely extended. Large quantities of corn and oats could be raised with ease and taken either by Land or water to any Northern post with ease as the roads from the Rapids are generaly very good and the Distance to Brownstown about fifty miles I know of no situation so advantageous as the above described places are for Raising produce between Huron Deleware and Detroit the Expence of transporting Grain by land will be imence untill an inormous sum of money is laid out in making a Road through the Maume swamp which is almost always impasable particularly in the rainey seasons of the year -- had the plan been adopted which you have suggested to me the summer past as things have turned out it would have saved the U. States some thousands of Dollars and been the meanes of forwarding our army. I hesitate not to say from my own knowledge that our troops would have been at Malden for as the Roads have been our teems could not carry but a little more than their own fead --

I am with Respect Sir yours P P[?]
