McARTHUR TO WORTHINGTON

Fruit hill Decr. 23rd 1812

Dear sir,

With respect to the teacher you mention, I cannot you know judge any thing about his qualifications all I can say is about the salery. If you think he will suit us or it is the best bargain we can make without too much loss of time, I am willing to join with you in employing him at the price you mention provided you will join next spring and build a schoolhouse on the line between us. Such a house as will answer until all our children are schooled. I see with you that my children are losing time and that a few doll- ars of expense in educating our children ought to be no object with either of us.

I would have written you by return mail was it both that Mr. Walson the Post Master was so busy that he could not deliver letters until after the mail was closed and sent off

I have called on Robert Smith for the appraisement of his team and waggon but he tells me that the appraisment bill is at Cincinnatti. I will however procure one from some of those who lost teams at the surrender, and have the act. made out and forwarded to you.

The conditions on which all teams and private property was taken into the service was that of having them valued and payed for by the government if lost. All the Waggons horses, Guns & private property was valued.

I have not yet been able to learn of Genl Taylor when the troops will be paid on the 15th he writes me that he has not been authorized by the paymaster of the U.S. army to put the money into the hands of the regimental paymasters and has pointed out no other way of paying off the troops. you say that you think the US P. Master informed you that he had written to me on the subject of having my Regt. paid through the Regimental pay master. I have not heard from him on the subject and the men are really suffering.

I doubt not but you have your hands full of business. I have never been so thronged in my life. very respectfully I am Dear sir yours

Duncan McArthur

Genl. Worthington
