McARTHUR TO WORTHINGTON Headquarters Sandwich July 29th 1812 Dear Sir I send this hasty note by the express which Genl. Hull sends to the states of Ohio & Kentucky for a reenforcement of troops, his requisition will be for a bout two thousand. I therefore beg that you and all friends to the cause will exert yourselves to turn out a few more volunteers from the state of Ohio, or at least such men as will be willing to cross the river into Canada, as it appears to be the understanding here that no militia man can be compelled to march out of the limits of the United States, and there are now a number of the drafted militia who came on with us who have not crossed to this side I have not mentioned this circumstance in any other letter which I have written to Ohio, it might have an improper effect -- you will therefore use your own discretion in making it public. We are unhapily situated there are so many tories and British spies among us and at Detroit that the Enemy is in possession of every movement and project we have in view. Within 12hours after it is first thought of whilst we are excluded from all and every infor- mation from the other side. Our army wants energy and our Government has been remiss in making the necessary preparations for this Campaign when re arived here scarcely a Gun was mounted, if our artilery had been in order when we came to Detroit we would now be in Maldin. I must close the bearer Mr. Cormat is just off adieu. I am yours respectfully Duncan McArthur NB I am not half done -- writing altho I have to close Michilimackinac has been taken and is now in possession of Indians and British. D McArthur 109 |
