JAMES MENARY TO WORTHINGTON Menary Blockhous July 12th 1812 Sir I receiv'd your favour of the 27 of June informing me of the Secretary of the department of war begin desirous of employing detachments of my company to carry his despatches from chillicotha to Detroit and bring back such information as the occasion may require I wish information what number of men are to be imploid in that Business, and how they are to be placed and subsist in the indian Country for Rations and forage Col. Russel has ordered Cpt Perry to march his company to vincennes and me to cover the frontier formerly coverd by Capt Perry and my self if this duty of Carrying despatches is to be carried on By my company I hope you will inform me when it is to begin and whare we are to start as the mail is uncertain from this place to vincennes Col. Russell has Requested all Returns to Be Carried to him by one or 2 rangers as the distance to him is 300 miles it would Be much more convenient for me to make my Returns through Gov Meggs if the Secretary would permit me to do so. I feel it my duty to do Government all the service in my power but as the frontier I have to cover is more than 100 miles and to carry the dispatches to detroit it will be very inconvenient to make returns by express 300 miles on a different rout please write to me on that subject with continence & respect James Menary |
