McARTHUR TO WORTHINGTON Headquarters Dayton May 8th 1812 Dear Sir On yesterday I wrote to you by an opportunity to Chillicothe in such haste and so many coranding my elbows that I know not Wnat I said. I have not the honour to inform you that there is a Regiment organized at this place, of volunteers from my division. I am elected to the comand of it Colo Janus[?] Denny & William A. Trimble from Highland are elected Majors in the three Elections which were held yesterday there was not a discenting vote among the volunteers, there appears to be the greatest unanimity. The 2nd Division has more than double its quota of volunteers. and the first on the ground except three companies from this neighbourhood. There are about ten companies at Cincinnati who are to march for this place on today. We are dir- ected to remain here for the orders of Genl. Hull of whom we have no account, neither have we heard any account of Colo. Kingsbury and the regular troops from Carlisle. We have been hurried off on very short notice and the most of us are very illy prepared for the Campaign. There are scarcely any Blankets among us -- we have been here near a week and neither Tents or camp equipage has arived. $10 or 15. is to be paid to each man tomorrow We are about to send back into the country to procure Blankets. A Mr. Bush was killed and scalped near Greenville on the 29th Ult. on the 2nd. Inst. a company of militia killed 2 Indians wounded another and took two squaws and some children prisoner. The governor arived here the night before last and on yesterday he sent Genl Munger and a party to greenville to direct that the prisoners to be taken to the Indian towns, and invite the friendly Indians to come in and take protections among the whites. An express from Fort Wayne says the Indians appear very illy disposed Indeed the front- eer inhabitents appear very much alarmed. Dear Sir let me again request that you will urge the issuing of my patents respectfully I am Dear Sir yours Duncan McArthur 88 |
