SAMUEL FINLEY TO WORTHINGTON Chilicothe May 4, 1812 Dear Sir. I hastily joyn with Captain Swearingen to sollicit your interest in be- half of a young man, now engaged in the Service of the United States. He is not more than eighteen year old, and promises more than ordinary. His Father was an Officer in the revolution, and I presume is known to you. Collo. Baskerville lives up Deer Creek, and is one of the Associate Judges of, per- haps, Maddison County. His Son, Edward B. Baskerville, who is the subject of this sollicitation, not having employment suited to his disposition and the manner in which he was educated, enlisted as a common Soldier. A Stranger to military service, he never reflected on its nature and the necessity of associating with persons so diverse in their disposition from his own. Freedom from the confinement to his present associates, which is irksome to himself and galling to his connections, is his earnest desire. He wishes an Ensignsy if it can be obtained but should it not, I presume an appointment in the Staff department would be cheerfully accepted. At his earnest request, and with the approbation of Captain Swearingen I write you in his favor, and trust you will do all in your power to benefit the young man I am Dr Sir, with respect your obedient Servant Sam.
