VAN HORNE TO WORTHINGTON Zanesville 13th April 1812 Dear Sir, The Governor left this place for Lancaster yesterday thence for Chili- cothe &c to Cincinnati to organize the Detachment of 1200. One Company is about raising here of Volunteers, one at St. Clairsville, &c Major Reynolds Capt. Jos. Cairns Lieut & my oldest son Ensign -- my son goes on today to accompany the Govr. to carry his orders to Urbana, Dayton &c and will join the detachment at Cincinnati. Genl. Cass is appointed Lt. Col. to Command in the Detachment how it is to be organized or by whom commanded I cannot yet learn probably Genl. Cass. The organization, and Staff Appointments, I am apprehensive will not accord with the arrangements of the Troops of the United States -- But a little reflection may yet set all right. I take it for Granted that war is unavoidable in which case, I should like to see the Volunteers, and whatever Troops can be immediately collected, sever Upper Canada from the British without delay, the Indians will be cut off from resources & thus lessen our extensive frontier. Yours sincerely V Horne Accept my gratitude for attending to my concerning at Mr. Gales &c shall attend to your directions V Horne My eldest son Isaac Van Horne, the only son now who can render me service at home, aged about 22 years, seems determined to Join the army -- he has now accepted an Ensigncy in our Volunteer Compy to join at Cincinnati. Seeing he is bent on going (as I was at his age) I should have been glad of an appoint- ment for him in the Regular Troops (probably now too late) If however a berth should of::er by non-acceptance of some of those lately appointed -- of 1 or 2d. Lieutenant, should be under renewed Obligations to you could you affect it. Recommendations would long since have been sent on for him -- but the loss of my second son last winter-- made me anxious to keep him at home -- I have however at length considered it my duty to yield to his desires, when our common country is in danger -- Probably my friends Gregg & Morrow will aid you in the application Accept sir &c V Horne 80 |
