BENJ. HOUGH TO WORTHINGTON

Zanesville February 11th 1812

Dear Sir

I received yours enclosing the list of locations in the U. States, military dis- trict; for which please to accept my sincere thanks -

From the paper I find that Congress is progressing towards completing the mili- tary force, contemplated in the early part of the session; or at least drawing towards a close of the legislative, or wind work of that establishment -

From the number of applications which I understand has gone from this state, for commissions in the contemplated army; I presume the executive will be at no loss for officers - and if soldiers can be raised with the same facility, or if the surplus of applicants could be converted into soldiers, the compliment would soon be completed - I find that many recommendations have gone from this place, for persons who are the most violent in opposition to the late, and present administration - It appears as tho there was a particular desire in those, to obtain the command of that army - Several of such applications have been brought to me for my signature, which I have refused; even after the signatures of some of our highest civil officers ware annexed thereto - Those recommendations will mostly come under your notice, and if it is still necessary to adhere to principal, would it not be well to point them out to the executive? least he should be imposed upon, who cannot have any knowledge of the applicants, only from recommendations

The impeachment is over; and Judge Thompson is cleared on every charge - The Senate is now occupied on a bill for fixing the permanent seat of government, and for removing the tempoary seat to Chillicothe - A Joint resolution passed both branches of the legislature for fixing the permanent seat oposite to franklinton, on the east side of the scioto, and the temporary seat at Chillicothe - A bill was accordingly brought in, and is now before the Senate but whether it will pass or not, is some- what uncertain - The resolution passed the Senate 13 to 11 - and the house 25 to 20 - If the bill passes the Senate, it will certainly pass the house.-

From the long sedentary business, my health is considerably impaired - In order therefore to recruit my health, I wish to fall into some employment of a more active kind - Would there not be a chance for obtaining a contract for some part of the contemplated military force? - or for surveying, and opening the roads which are to be cut from Sandusky &c. to the settlement in this state? - A line from you on these subjects would be thankfully received -

With due respect I am yours &c

BenJ. Hough
