OSL MANN TO MEIGS Marietta July 9th 1812 Sir I have recd orders from Gen Tupper for the Light horse under my command to hold themselves in Momentary readiness for taking the field -- I am directed to raise & organize Eighty men inmy Regiment Light Horse included. the Light Horse consisting of about 30 will leave fifty Infantry - the Gen in Apportioning the officers in the differ[ent] Countys -- Gave Galia for 77 Men one Capt 1 Lieutenant & I Emsign Athens for 51 men one Capt 1 Lieutenant & I Ensign Washington will have about 50 Infantry w hich will be disagreeable to them to be attached to tie other Companies - - I was requested by Gen Tupper as he has such poor opportunity of Mail to inform you the situation and request you to except this Light horse officers extra -- your exceptance of these officers will much oblidge your Obt Sert & be highly gratifying to the Militia under my command I am, sir respectfully your Obt Sert James Mann Col. His Excelency PS I wish you to inform me at this place Munday the 20th Instant. I ordered the Regt to meet a Marietta Gen Clark & the party of Indian Cheifs pa ssed up the River yesterday If you except the officers of the Cavalry that will give me officers for my company of infantry if I do not here from you before Regimental muster I shall be at a Loss but think I shall venter to organise a Company Sir after puting this letter in the office I saw Capt Devol who in- formed there was no arms in that Company & that he knew of no place to procure them I w ish you would in your letter to me or to him inform us where they can be procurd I shoul.d be very glad to see you here on the 20th inst I am Sir &c James Mann |
