OSL RUSSELL TO MEIGS New port, ye. 16th, May 1812. Sir, In obedience to order's I have recently received from the honorable the Secretary of wa r, I am directed to take command of the two company's of rangers to be raised in the State of Ohio, Indiany, Illinoy's, and the company to be raised in Kentucky, for the defence of the frontiers of Ohio, Indiany, and Illinoy's territory's. I am requested Sir to confer with yourself, and the Governors of the said Territory's of on the best moade of defence for those frontiers. I also have it in my power to call forth the aid of the troops raised, and to be raised in the State of Ohio, and Kentucky, to coopperate with we should I deem it essential for the good of the Service; I am also instructed to mount any portion of the rangers I may think proper for the good of that Service -- I hope Sir to hear from you, as soon as is co nvenient, giving me your opinion, as to the better moad of defence, on that extensive frontier; I leave this post for Lexington Ky where a letter will find me for 10 or 12 days to come. I am desirous to hear from you before I write on to Governor Harrison, and Governor Edwards - I cannot make any disposition as to the two companys in your State until I hear from yourself -- In haste -- I have the honor to be with high respect your obdt.
