OSL FOOS TO MEIGS Franklinton Feb. 1st. 1813 -- Dr Sir I expected to be indulged with an answer to a letter, I had the honer to adress to you a fiew Days scinee on the subject of Colo. McArther resuming the Command of the 2d. Division of the Militia of this State -- but supose the falure originated in consequence of no mail ariving here last Weeck now having an opertunity of writing you by Mr Gardner, who will return imediately by him I hope to recive not only your answer to the enqueres made in the letter aluded to, but your express orders & advice how you wish me to act on that subject -- the gloomy asp- ect of our affairs towards the Lake, requires that every spring of government should be in motion -- As Commandant this Brgd. I feel extremely anxious to [torn] my Duty -- but such seems to be the public opinion here, that any attempt I might make to raise troops under Colo. McArthur's orders Major Genl, would be treated with contempt nor will they feel them selves bound to [march] I have thought it my duty to make [this] candid statement to you that your [torn] interference may avert the impending conflict that seems to lower on the prospect beofre [us] I hope not to be vested with the Command of the Divison -- but that you deside by what authority I shall raise the quote of Troops required of this Brgd. -- I have the honer to [torn] with sentiments of Esteem your Very respectively Jos Foos His Excellency |
