OSM WINGATE TO MEIGS Franklinton the 30th of Augt. 1813 Governor Meigs Sir I presume you have become acquainted with the circumstance of the young shawanoe murdering the man near St Marys -- and perhaps cannot account for his liberation I intended long since to apprized. of the conditions on which the offender was set at liberty I was very sick at St. Marys the time it took place and my indisposition has still prevented my writing. you on the subject untill this period however the condictions you will find on the within closed Intrument which I have thought it my duty to send your Excellency that you may be fully acquainted with the situation in which I left that unfortunate affair the reasons why I acceded to the [illeg.] solicitations and propositions of the chiefs to liberate him were numerous but I deem it unnecessary to set them out at Large here and being very unwell at this moment shall close without further observations on the subject as the article notwithstanding its imperfections will give you a distinct Idea of the standing and situation of the Culprit andthat he is at your mercy and the chiefs are bound to deliver him. when call'd on by the proper authority I am with respect your & c John Wingate |
