OSL VAN HORN TO MEIGS Zanesville 15th. January 1813 Sir After great research I find it impracticable to make an Accurate return of the public Arms delivered me at this place & Issued to the different detachments, for want of the receipt book Mr. Buckingham & myself delivered you when you gave the first drafts the number recd. I enterd on my day book. It was Musket & Bayonets 311 Cartouch Boxes 125 And after furnishing Genl Lynch with 75 there were left 236 Major Miller, now Col Miller detacht. 221 -- 15 Stand remaining those were delivered to Capt. Campbells Company of Major Connels detachment - one or two more I think to the Companies of the same detachnent, and the ballence were deliverd Charles Moore for the use of the few men left at the Forks of the River became much alarmd & during the absence of Col Williams [torn] taken nearly all the able bodied Men with him last [torn] they have not ywr vwwn ewruens --altho I have send word [torn] several times since Col Williams return -- a number of additional Cartouch boxes were deliverd to the different detachments all of which, as well as the Muskets & Bayonets are receipted for in those small books deliverd you on Settlement of the account and to which I beg leave to refer you to correct any misstatement I now make, principally from recollection. Hauling from the river, unpacking & seting up (omitted to be [illeg.] $2 Elijah Ross for Cleaning & repairing 15 Samuel Frazey repairing Cartouch boxes 1.75 What remains unpaid to Individuals in the Accounts sent by Major Smith we are frequently [illeg.] for, We have therefore to request your Excellency to draw a bill or bills for the amount as soon as your conven- ience will admit, and enclose them to me or deliver them to Dr Hamm or Major Smith to forward to us as soon as oppertunity offers Agreeable to your direction I forwarded to Col Sloan the dates of the two Majors Commissions Darrah & Cotgrive An Inspection return of the Detachment Commanded by Col Charles Williams has also come to hand which had their rendezvous at Coshocton the 26 August last as stated in the returns Viz: 1 Collonel 2 Majors 2 Captains The return sums up 96 Men including 2 Lieutenants officers -- from which it would appear 2 Ensigns that the Serjeants & Corporals must be 8 Serjeants included in the Rank & file, or omitted 8 Corporals to be carried into the total of 96 89 Rank & file NB. The charges of Ross for repairing Arms to the best of my recollection included some additional repairs of the public Arms, which upon examin- ation were unfit for service - but the greater part was for the repair of private Arms, allowed to be unfit for actual service in [illeg.] field, with such repairs, for further information. I refer [illeg.] to Col McConnel who commanded three of the Detachments But few of the returns from the Militia Generals have yet come to hand, of course it is not possible to make an Agregate return yet I have the honor to be Sir Excellencys Obdt Hul Servt I V Horne |
