OSL VAN HORN TO MEIGS Zanesville 20th. Octr. 1812 Sir, The enclosed letter I had written in a hurry to go by Liut. Lee, his not calling on me for it disappointed its conveyance The detachments have not arrived to day -- and by a letter recd. this day from Genl. Paul, the want of Tents, Camp equipage & furnishing the Men with Rations may prevent their March as soon as I expected them the Contractor Mr. Barr declind furnishing them Mr. Laffer & Co. Who had furnished Col Bays detachment I expect here tomorrow evening for the pur- pose of supplying them -- I had requested each detachment to furnish themselves untill they arrived here, Where they would be furnishd & satisfied for their Rations so far -- How to furnish them with Tents & Camp equipage is hard to say -- unless we have some assurance of the funds Genl. Paul informs me that Caldwell has about 3 or 400 over Wells, in Bellmont, for Congress, We calculate therefore he is Elected Our Country stands as in the enclosed lists The violent exertions making for the Election of De Wit Clinton for President, produced a meeting of Dems Republicans this evening - We have Manufactured a preamble & Resolution in the form of a Circular, to send over the State, to rally our forces for Mr. Madison, you will have one as soon as printed & the Mail can carry it, I need not therefore be parti- cular. The Feds are distributing bundles of pamphlets, to disparage Mr. Madison & elevate Clinton, and we have adopted the plan you adopted at Marietta four years ago, in the hope of defeating them. On the back of the list you are presented with an Electoral Ticket for DeWit Clinton -- Judge Wilson left here this morning -- he has publicly declined and will oppose them I am Sir your Excellencys Obedt. Huml. Servt. V Horne His Excellency |
