OSL TUPPER TO MEIGS Camp 26. Dec 1812 Dr Sir If the letter I enclosed you for Mrs Tupper has not been forwarded I will thank you to hand it to the bearer Mr Gibson from Gallia who came to our camp to convey home a sick son but was so unhappy as to find him placed by the side of the entombd volunteers from Gallia -- He however has the consolation to find that his son was among the foremost at the rapids; discharged his duty faithfully, lived among us much esteemed & died lamented I yesterday distributed 200 Blankets -- I received 30 to Make Match coats for the Sentinals -- I am in hopes the 1000 dollars you reserved will add greatly to the relief of some of our suffering soldiers, though it cannot equal their demands; The subject of reinforcing us under our present weakened state I hope will claim your consideration -- I am anxious to command a force that will give us at least a name, if not a character in the investing of Malden -- such numbers of sick, joined with those whose times may expire & will claim a discharge before we probably shall attack that place, will leave the command so inferior -- as destroy the fire & ambition of the remaining force -- This state is more than any other interested in the fall of Malden this winter -- The spring, if that remains, will open a bloody campaign, even on our fronteer with the Indians -- When Malden surrenders, I shall think the Indian War at an end, & the danger, & fatigue, to the Ohio quota will cease -- little from this quarter will remain to be done, but to garrison the posts I have the honor to be with great respect, your most obt humble Servt Edw W Tupper |
