(with the head of the advanced line) their first attempt to head towards Detroit, & as soon as they were driven back by the Bahonets, to direct their whole fire at their Gunboats (which would have been immedately under the banks) - always shooting down the men who should attempt to take hold of the helm -- everything I believe was arranged to secure us as compleat a victory as war ever gained, and would have acquired to our- selves a no sma 11 share of honor; But in this we have been disappointed; we can only boast like others of what we would have done -- The event has terminated so different front what I calculated, that I even feel the praise indeed may have in some cases have been too liberally bestowed -- I am particularly requested by Mrs Tupper, in her name to thank you for your kindness in writing her, -- her letter was dated the 17th of Novr. - She will feel herself under new obligations for your attention since that period, for which please to accept my grateful acknowledgement- I w rite, with Ink & fingers nearly frozen, the snow wind & smoke driving over my paper Please to present my compliments to such of the members of the two houses as feel for my safety & honor -- General Win- chester I shall see at the Rapids -- If he carries a brighter Sword than I do, let him take it appear at Malden -- I shall be glad to hear from you at any time you have a spare moment -- we are shut out from news unless our friends think of us -- I am very respectfully & with much esteem yr Hl st Edw.W.
