OSL TUPPER TO MEIGS Urbana Monday evening 31. Aug [1812] Gov Meigs Sir) The enclosed letter from Cincinnati will shew, that we are to March without Tents, while the Keny Troops are fully supplied -- I do not believe the Ohio Militia will yield to March with them under such circumstances -- We have now no hopes of a supply -- What has Ohio done that her soldiers Must March without shoes, blankets or Tents -- & without the means of purchasing them? -- I am hurt to feel it a duty I owe the soldiers, & to guard against consequences not in the power of superior Officers to con- tinue to call your searous attention to this subject -- still I Know of nothing you can do in the subject, unless it be to Draw for the pay due the soldiers, & send & purchase something which May serve to cover them, I feel more for the disorder which will arise from a continuation of this neglect to the Ohio Troops than I do from any personal sufferings which may fall to my share, tho' I will never consent to sleep under a Tent while the soldiers are destitute The Next subject is that of the Letters of Williams & Bennet &c -- The fact is those people are alarmed beyond reasoh, & I may almost say without cause -- I told the Bearer I Knew your wishes would not countinance such an army & in fact so many of them as are now forming up there, That you had in this quarter only permitted ranges of Blockhouses established with a sufficiency of Men to pay to guard them -- That you had no money at command, & no camp equipage to furnish them, I proposed writing what you had advised & practiced here & recommended his return -- He concluded to visit you & by that means I have this Oppertunity of forwarding Mr Ganos Letter-- Would it not be advisable to consult with Messrs. Washington & Morrow as to the neglect our Militia are the victims of & the readiest Method of alleviating them Very Respy Edw W Tupper |
