OSL CALVIN AUSTIN TO MEIGS Warren March 29th. 1813 Dear Sir I would suggest the propriety of a Guard to the Stores of Grand river and Cleavland as there are large Stores at those places - which are intended for our Western Army -- I should say it would require a Guard one or two Months -- or at least untill our Gun-boats can be sent from Erie -- to take the stores to the army -- there is a Company of Exempts that will Volunteer for that purpose, to Guard the stores at Grand river -- those will be Citizens over 45 years -- another Company can be raised not Exempts for Cleavland. I have understood that Gen. Harrison has said he has nothing to do with this -- and it entirely necessary that some- thing should be done soon -- It is my opinion that the Stores will be in great danger when the British come to sail the Lake For the purpose of being always ready we have sent Artemas Baker Esqr to the Secretary of War to solicit 4000 stand of Arms and six. field pecies and other munitions of War so as we can have access to them if any imergency should require if You can be of any service to us in the start we should be very thankfull -- and as to the Volunteers for the purpose proposed. I should like to hear from you soon -- I am sir very Respectfully Your most Obt. Huml. Sevt. Calvin Austin |
