OSL DAVID SUTTON TO MEIGS Camp near Fort McArthur Decem. 19th, 1812 Sir, Several of our men have died a number are sick and some of which are very low, I received late information from Gen Winchesters Army by two of Capt. Woods spies that the Gen. was stationed six mile below defiance, had some provisions, but of Flour only three days half rations for his men that a number had died, many sick, and a considerable number verry badly clothed, some entirely bearfooted that as they returned 16 mile above fort Jennings on St Marys there were a large quantity of flour in crafts stoped by reason of the water being frozen, and that they discovered no other movement by which any flour was to be conveyed to General Winchester, at Fort Jennings no flour and a number of the men badly clothed, I have been since I seen you, to Gen. Harrison in order to get leave to have the Regiment together, he informed me that his arrangement was for that to be done when at the Rappids, on the 19th of Nov. Gen. Tupper give me three choices to wit, take a furlough, or go to my first Battalion (tlat being at St Marys) or take my commission bearing date at that time, I refused taking either, but offered to take a commission bearing even date with that of my certificate of the election, To wit, 7th. of September, the commiss- ion I have never received neither do I expect to, unless your excellency should send it to me, but of this I am not anxious, and wish you to do as you may think most advisable, on the 20th. Nov. I received a written order signed by the Gen. for me to repair to St. Marys or wheresoever my first Battalion might be stationed and remain with that battalion til further orders Col. Miller ordered to take the command of the detachment, on 20th. Gen. left camp in order as I had understood by report to go to Franklinton to [In margin: N.B. if should not have orders to march from this I expect to be at Urbana lst. of January on my way to the first battalion.] To answer to his arrest, on 23d Nov. I arived at Urbanna on my way to St. Marys, received a letter from Gen. Tupper dated 21st Nov. giving me priviledge to either go on or return to camp and receive the command of my 2nd Battalion, I went to St. Marys, and have since returned, my first Battalion claims a discharge on the tenth or eleventh day of February next, and my second Battalion shortly after, if a relief should not arive will we be at liberty to leave our stations until a relief shall appear, your oppinion on this question will be thankfully received by your friend and very humble Sevt.
