OSL JOHN CAMPBELL TO MEIGS Ravenna Novr. 24th. 1812 Hond Sir Pursuant to your Orders, on the first day of July last I called my Company of Volunteers together and with all Possible speed made preparations to March to sandusky, previous to the commencement of my March I made a journey to Cleveland in order to engage water craft to convey my Men and Baggage to Sandusky but not being able at that time to provide any I re- turned home and purchased a team for that purpose but when we arrived at Cleveland with the Troops I was fortunate enough to procure Boats suffi- cient for the purpose and proceeded on from there by Water (after haveing the team in keeping at a farm in the vicinity) and arrived at Sandusky, not long after my arrival it became verry sickly in Camp and being myself very severely attacked with the fever and not able to procede with the troops when we received orders to march to Detroit, when after taking the advice of the Surgeon who attended us I returned down the Lake as far as Black River at which place I was at the time of the surrender of Detroit, by Genll. Hull -- The Company under the Command of a Lieutenant in con- junction with Capt. Rowlands Company proceded up the Lake as far as the River Raisin from when they were taken by the British and carried to Mal- den and from thence sent to Cleveland and are now in a scattered situation mostly sick and in want of necessaries they being stripped of most part of their property they had with them and have never received any part of their Wages. I should wish to be informed to whoom I am to make my Returns and in what way or through what channel we are to receive pay for our time and losses sustained by individuals. As soon as my health will admit I will wait upon your honour in person and render an account of the expences in getting on to sandusky but at present it is impossible for I have not ben able to do any kind of business since I left Sandusky as is Likewise the case with many of my Compy. I am Sir with due esteem your obedient and very humble servt. John Campbell Return J. Meigs Esqr. |
