OSL J. G. JACKSON TO MEIGS My dear Sir. [Sept. 13, 1812] The uncertainty where you were (still existing) has prevented me writing to you for many weeks. I have caught at every thing connected with your movements & office acts with an interest corresponding with my affect- ion for you. The Base surrender of Hulls army I knew would wound you to the soul -- you had created it you had been the instrument of delivering it to his care -- & you must have felt for them as for your own children. All this I knew you must feel, but Hell itself does not contain such per- fidy & villany as I have heard is superadded & for this, you are more than mortal if you are sufficiently steeled. It is said as you know, that you are suspected of being a Traitor also -- that you are Hulls brother in law, & must have been in his confidence. But although it must vex you that your conduct has not shielded you from a suspicion so foul -- yet I pre- dict that a triumph awaits you to the transcendant villany of the attack upon your honor I wish you would write me on this topic, & let me know what & who have originated this charge, & who connive at it or repel it. who will oppose you for Governor, & what the prospect of success. Within a few days 1500 of our Militia have been ordered out to rendezvous at Point Pleasant & there obey the orders of the President - from this County they will march on thursday. I am anxious to know to what point they will be sent, & what prospect they will have to distinguish themselves. Also where Harrison's Volunteers for 25 or 30 days will be marched. I shall remain here until the 8 or 10th. of October & then set out to join our men on their March as a volunteer; unless I am assured they will not be engaged in any active service. If the force sent to Kenhawa are destined to Detroit I can join them at or near Urbana, & altho I shall have no nominal command I shall actually be enabled to lead any party destined to perform a daring service or be a coadjutor with the Officer who may be selected. I have been informed by the Governor of Virginia that I should have been selected to command our 1500 had it not been for the juniority of my commission, I must however go & do something, the opportunity is now afforded & the act will be the more glorious after Hulls disaster if you see Harrison & be is to command apprise him of my intention & learn his opinion concerning it. Mary & our little Mary are well they will accompany me to Ma rietta & then remain with Mrs Meigs until further orders. I salute you my dear Sir affectionately J. G. Jackson Honble R J Meigs PS offer my regards to Mr Kinshalve. I would if I had time answer his letter Mrs Goulding is just arrived & is with us JGJ |
