OSL ROBERT BAYLOR TO MEIGS Camp near Mansfield 12th. Sept. 1812 Sir This morning about day light the Indians made an attact on a scouting party of men from my Camp in the house of a Mr. Copus two of them got killed & two wounded Mr Copus was killed & his Daughter wounded one of my men Missing as yet from last engagement -- last Thursday evening there was four killed near the same place two men and two Women. I am here but not able to Defend the inhabitanc and from report believe the Indians will ravage our country without spedy releaf I am without men or at least a sufficient number also without any provition to support what men I have here. I think the men which was Dismissed from the 4th. Brigade would be of infinate service if here at this time hope we may be relieved ere long with men and a necessary store to enable us to Defend our frontiers it is supposed there was fifty Indians in company in the last engagement I am your Humble Servt Robert Baylor R J Meigs Governor |
