OSL J. B. MUNSON TO MEIGS Zanesville September 10th. 1812 Dr. Sir, You cannot accuse me, with a frequent impesition of my addresses upon you -- nor on the other hand, every circumstance and situation considered, do I accuse my self of a want of courtly or friendly attention in refraining from writing to you this long -- In plain truth I defered, to detail some- thing acceptable untill all w as ours, and here we are the living dead -- Was this all - had the current of calamity stoped with the completion of our disgrace and on our return had we found ourselves moved by a rock in- stead of recked in a tempest -- had the public mind been sound and provident instead of being mudaid and furious - our case would not have been unexampled nor hopeless What violence pervails everywhere & what strange accusations and what condemnations -- If the public mind completely debauched -- does the press characterize our abandonment. Is there no such thing as genuine Patriotism - all a ctions we test of motive -- Sir, after having witness- ed your zeal your vigil your provations[?] in the public service - after having heard you arraigned and censured for straining the very limited powers under what you acted to give life & vigour and being to the public defence, but for the fact, could I believe it possible that you, should be accused, arraigned and condemned for the result, where all guidance or direction was given to others, or that you should be implicated in their weakness or wickedness - Insensibility indeed would characterize that being who can [illeg.] your Station, loaded and burthened with your example and satanic that mind that would resort to detroytion[?] to obtain it - Be assured of the perfect confidence of the Army of your creation - There extreme regret at the transfer of command -- and I own, verry sure of their stinted interest in your favour at the ensuing election. These stowed[?] down as we are I am sure will be consolatory -- in non success & an ample refutation of the silly charges of vile instruments - instructed I expect by next fridays mail to be -- what is the division of Government with respect to the Volanteers -- god grant it may be action- I am but a portable concase[?] -- yet confident that I shall be no invaled - time will give me an opportunity to converse with you - untill which succes to all your labours Yours J. B. Munson R J Meigs Esquire |
