OSL SAMUEL McCORD TO MEIGS

Fort Meigs Sept 9 - 1812

Dr Sir

Yesterday at 10 Oclock the Crain and about thirty of the diferent Chiefs Started to the Council Leut Vaus and four of our Company went as an escort Mr Leans & Mr Armstrong as Interpreters there is at this time about 150 Indians at our fort Including Women & Children on Saturday last Genl Tupper S ates that your Excellency and himself would ride up on Sunday which Word I sent to the fort the Crain Was Much pleased that he would have an opportunity of Showing you his favor and Requested the Liberty of giving you a Fire accordingly there guns was put In complete Order and themselves Drest in the best Manner - they could that evening arrived and State to them that your Bisness prevented Your Coming and Explained Your proclamation - also Requested that thier Young men would not Exceed 3 Mile in their Walks that if it was necessary to go further I would Sent one of our company with them which Pleased them verry much the Crain Wishes to Know if you requested them to go threw Urbana or otherwise I informed him You Left it Optianal with him that the councill Would soon break up and he had better take the nighest road he said he was anctious to get there to tell his Brethren What you had done for them the old Sineca Cheif Seamed Verry much Pleased and gave you a great Many thanks Some time after they started to the councill a Dellaware Woman arrived in a distressed Situation from a place Called Green town an Indian Village on the Watters of HaHicken or Whitewomans creek and she stated that herself and three others Made there Escape from the White People that about 800 of our People came there 6 days ago and requested them to come into the Settlement their Cheif (Armstrong) told them the Governor had invited them to come in to Zeanses[?] and he knew the best way and would go their - they immediately Set a gard round the town Armstrong hid himself in a cornfield and the White people thretned the nation if they did not produce him accordingly they found him and took him to the army and this Woman States that one Man a Woman and Child Escaped the gard in company with herself and they Ware attacted and fired on Since which time She had not seen any of them She came first to Upper Sandusky and seeing no person their She took their Supposed trail and came on the chiefs that remains have Called a councill and Wished to Send for the Crain to come back I requested them not supposeing it to be a false allarm and I Promised to Inform your Excellency of the Subject
