OSL PAUL D. BUTLER TO MEIGS

Delaware August 25th 1812

Sir

I have evacuated Fort Sandusky and the men together with most of the inhabitants have arrived safe in Delaware It was impossible for me to secure the public good and property at the time of the alarm -- four companies march from Delaware this morning to the assistance of Crane and to secure the property at the fort if possible -- We shall Keep a guard on the line untill your pleasure is made Known to us -- I have been unable to draw money from Detroit as I expected which leave me in a very dis- agreeable situation I purchased most of the provision and other necessaries for Sandusky on my own credit -- the pay day has expired and I am without cash -- the vaggoners are without pay, calling on me continually if you can send me some money or put me in a way to get it you will oblige me very much -- Capt. Norton's men are almost all sick, and stand in need of their pay any much a draught upon the Secretary at War would [illeg.] per- haps -- The inhabitants of this quarter are upon the alert and are deter- mined to defend the frontier, whether they are assisted by government or not -- We stand in great need of arms and ammunition -- Your immediate orders would be very acceptable at this time

I remain yours with much esteem

Paul D. Butler

His excellency the governor of Ohio
