P. S. Before sealing this letter, I have taken the most particular pains the time would admit of, to ascertain, by personal enquiries, if there was any settled plan of mischief concerted against this place. The answers given me amount to this, that inhabitants in this neighborhood have declared, that if they should hear that strange Indians had arrived here, they would immediately go and shoot them, and shoot also any Indian that would protect them, [cut out, one word] in fact amounts to the same as uttering a threat against all the lives of all the inhabitants here. Express[ions] also are frequent, which evince the determination to embrace the first opportunity to destroy this Indian settlement. -- I request that this letter may be considered as confidential. |
