OSL PETITION TO MEIGS To His Excellency Return Jonathan Meigs, Governor of Ohio -- Sir, The uncertain situation of affairs between the Whites and Indians keeps the Citizens in the Northwest parts of Montgomery and the Northeast parts of Preble in fear -- Numbers of them have moved in, and we believe (unless some encouragement is given them) all the upper settlements on Wolf Creek will be evacuated in a few days -- We are convinced that you have a great deal to do, and we believe you feel a painful solicitude for the welfare of all -- We are therefore extremely sorry to suggest any thing that will add to your anxiety for the public good; but if the exi- gencies of our frontier settlements in general will admit of it we hope you will order one captain's company to guard the head of Wolf Creek & Twin Creek until after harvest - With much respect we are sir your friends & obt Hbl Serts [Here follow the petitioners' names.] 18th May 1812 |
