OSL SAMUEL HAWKINS TO MEIGS Eaton May the 12th 1812 Sir Agreeably to the orders of Bgdr general Manger[?] I have cause a compy of the Militia of this regiment to be embodyed and Marched to our frontiers where they are now building a small fort to protect the settlements on white water I have only been able to procure them about ten days pro- visions and am afraid that it will be extreamly dif icult to provide pro- visions arms amunition and camp equipage. Those who have such things will not spare them unless they receive ready money (which we have not) I would take it as a favour if you would inform me Whaat method I am to take to procure the necessaries requisite for aformentioned detachment whilst in service -- Mjr. Lanier who was out On the frontiers last week with a small detachment informs me that he came upon the trail of about five Indians Six miles above the fort now building. The Inhabitants in the New purchase are abandoning their habitations and Moveing to the Interior. report says One Man has been killed near Brookville the Savages were pursued and five of them were killed. Three men who were at the nearest Town of the Indians on thursday last report the Town is abandoned only two old Squaws being left from whom they could obtain no information -- Mr Mitchell MY quarter Master will hand you this Any in- formation how to proceed given to him will be thankfully received.
