23 Captn. Finnis (who I am most happy to say has arrived) gave me hopes that there were 4 Companies of the 41st coming on, on that information I dispatched an Officer to bring them down here either to carry them by water to Amherstburg or to detain them for an attack when I could collect a body of Indians, but the 4 Companies turned out only one which will be here today. I intend going down as low as I can & I hope to secure the brig & 2 Schooners if they have got above the Rapids. I shall then return to when I hope to have your approval of my proposi- tions & also to receive the much wished for means to put them in execu- tion. If I have any hopes of having the means for the destruction of the Enemy's Squadron I shall immediately proceed to Amherstburg, collect all the vessels I can & all the Boats & make Long Point the Head Quarters at all events I must return to Amherstburg both for the purpose of getting Bread & to hurry them on in the Dock Yard. I hope that His Excellency the Governor will see the state of his Upper Government in its proper point of view & that he will concur in the means to render its safety secure. I have appointed Captn. Finnis to the Lady Prevost Lieut Buchan shall be appointed according to your desire and if you will please to give Captn. The Morning was most favorable to have a full view of them and I am sorry to state that they are so very much superior to H M Squadron that |
