Marietta December 28th. 1789.
General Orders
Ebenezar Sproat Esqr. is appointed Lt. Col of the
first Battalion of Militia of the County of Was-
hington, Robert Oliver Esqr. Major, Jonathan
Morris Esqr. a Capt. -- Lieut Anselmn Tupper
Adjutant & John Gray Gentn. and Ensign in the
same--- And are to be obeyed as such --
By a former Order the Returns of the Militia
were required to be made Weekly - but as that
has been found to be inconvenient, for the
future they are to be made monthly -- on the
first Day of each Month, to the Lt Col or Of-
ficer Commanding.
The Governour has ob-
observed with some Regret that little Attention
is paid to Militia Duties -- Though the Settlement
is at present in a State of Safety, there is a
faithless People on the Frontier, & a People
who may be led to Acts of Hostility without
any Provocation from the Inhabitants of
the Territory -- Self Preservation therefore dicta-
tes that they be prepared -- the Advantages
will result to the People themselves, & the
Penalties of the Law will be avoided.
