Ohio's Garden Path: the Flowering of Our Landscape

An Exhibit at the Ohio Historical Center, Columbus, Ohio

Owning a plot of land with a little garden and a house is part of the American dream. As Americans we value our personal space, and once settled upon a site, we set about to create our own version of Eden - selectively planting grooming and changing the landscape to suit our sense of style. The gardens we create are often a reflection of our origins, values, fashions and a response to technological and social change. Explore these fundamental beliefs in the Society's new exhibit, Ohio's Garden Path: the Flowering of Our Landscape.

Quotation by A.J. Downing, 1844: "It is the ambition of some to have a great house and a little land, and of others...to have a little house and a large garden. The latter would seem to be the more natural taste."
